Let’s get into my November reading wrap-up! I read 6 books last month: 3 Fantasy, 1 Sci-Fi Graphic Novel, 1 Historical Fiction, and 1 Romance. All by & about Black & Latine folks!
Nocturna by Maya Motayne
This is a really cool start to a series. I really felt for Alfie & Finn as they tried to navigate this crisis in the kingdom as well as inner demons. The magic system was also pretty unique compared to the other fantasy books I've read this year. I love the inclusion of conversations on class, oppression, grief, & manipulation. I definitely recommend it!
Oculta by Maya Motayne
Book 2 of the series is just as action-packed as the 1st! I'm glad that we get to be with the same group from book 1 & that we get to learn more about Finn's backstory. She's a fascinating character & kind of reminds me of Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy in her relationship with her "parent." The only thing that marked this book down for me was that I could predict the ending.
Lucero by Maya Motayne
After 2 books, "bathtub boy" finally gets his backstory & I was super happy about it, not that his story is one to be happy about. I like how the dynamics between Alfie and Finn didn't conform to the norm of romantic interests in fantasy series.
Vern, Custodian of the Universe by Tyrell Waiters
This book contemplates life on a level I wasn't expecting from a graphic novel!!! Like, it kinda hurt. I felt so seen by Vern's situation of being pushed to constantly clean up the messes of the Universe without being told where they are coming from & why they keep cropping up.
Amazing story & illustrations!
The Taste of Sugar by Marisel Vera
TLDR - This is an incredible Historical Fiction book I think y’all need to read.
Sleeping with the Frenemy by Natalie Caña
TLDR - This is my fave of the series.
