Synopsis
No strings
After Ava Rodriguez’s now-ex-husband declares he wants to “follow his dreams”—which no longer include her—she’s left questioning everything she thought she wanted. So when a handsome hotelier flirts with her, Ava vows to stop overthinking and embrace the opportunity for an epic one-night-stand.
No feelings
Roman Vázquez’s sole focus is the empire he built from the ground up. He lives and dies by his schedule, but the gorgeous stranger grimacing into her cocktail inspires him to change his plans for the evening. At first, it’s easy for Roman to agree to Ava’s rules: no strings, no feelings. But one night isn’t enough, and the more they meet, the more he wants.
No falling in love
Roman is the perfect fling, until Ava sees him at her cousin’s engagement party—as the groom’s best man, no less! Maintaining her boundaries becomes a lot more complicated as she tries to hide their relationship from her family, but Roman isn’t content being her dirty little secret. With her future uncertain and her family pressuring her from all sides, Ava will have to decide if love is worth the risk—again.
Review
I’ve never read a book that described my maternal family’s dynamics so well! The judgmental matriarch, gossiping, misogyny, loyalty, controlling behavior over decision-making, “playful teasing,” the expectations, and pressure to be perfect. I even saw a tía (Titi Val) similar to mine (Tati aka Batata) who acts as the trusted barrier between her niece & their family’s judgments.
It’s hard to escape the feelings of shame and loneliness that stems from this inter-generational trauma because of how normalized it is! Like Ava, I spent a lot of my life doing what my family told me was best, but when I really got to know myself outside of our home and held my own, they didn’t respond well. I didn’t get married in the first few years of my relationship. When I did get married, I didn’t take my husband’s last name. I started wearing my natural curls instead of flat ironing my hair. I’ve experienced pushback and teasing from my family for all of these things and fully understand why Ava acted the way that she did with her family. Saying, “no” felt forbidden and wrong. Despite all of this, we still love each other. It’s just complicated! Thank you, Alexis Daria for capturing this experience authentically!
Ava and Roman’s love story is complicated and deep but it is also sexy as hell!! Their personalities compliment each other well and sometimes their issues mirror the others. I.e. Their tendency to give more of themselves to others regardless of their own needs.
So if you want to read a book with fantastic family drama, a perfectionist who gets messy, & a workaholic who wants to pamper his loved ones, you need to get your hands on this book!
